How to Choose the Right Size Dining Table for Your Room

Choosing a dining table is about size before style. A table that is too big makes a room feel cramped, and one that is too small never quite looks right. Here is how to get it right before you order.
Measure the room first
Start with the room itself. Measure the length and width of the space you have, then mark out where the table will sit. Allow about 90cm of clearance from the edge of the table to walls, worktops or doorways. That gives people room to pull out their chairs and walk around without bumping into anything.
If the room is open-plan, look at how the table will sit within the wider layout. Check that it won't block a route through to the kitchen or the garden.
Work out how many people you need to seat
Next, think about who will actually sit at the table. Plan for about 60cm of width per person. A table for four needs roughly 120cm of length, while a table for six needs something closer to 180cm.
Think about everyday use, not just Christmas dinner. If most meals are for two or three, a smaller table with the option to extend will often suit you better than a large table that sits half empty.
Choose the shape that suits the space
Rectangular tables suit long rooms and open-plan kitchens, where they follow the lines of the space. Round and oval tables suit smaller rooms, and they make conversation easier because nobody sits at the end, far from the others.
The shape also changes how much floor space you need. A round table can fit into a tighter corner than a rectangular one of the same seating capacity, so measure the space you have before you decide.
Think about extending
An extending table gives you space for guests without filling the room every day. Check how much room the extended size needs, and make sure you can open the leaves without hitting walls or furniture.
For families who host now and then, this is often the most practical choice. You get a compact table most of the time and a larger one when you need it.
Make it fit your space
Every table we make is built to order in our Norfolk workshop. That means the length, width, timber and steelwork can be adjusted to suit your room, rather than picked from a catalogue. If your space is an unusual size, or you want a particular length for your household, we can work to those measurements.
Before you shop: a quick checklist
- Measure the length and width of the room.
- Leave about 90cm of clearance around the table.
- Plan for about 60cm of width per person.
- Decide whether you need the table to extend.
- Check the route through the room with the table in place.
- Note any doorways, radiators or windows that could limit where it sits.
With these measurements in hand, you will know the right size before you look at a single table.
